On Saturday 21st May the help Ukraine event was held at Quex Park. An amazing line-up of people got together to raise money for charities helping Ukrainians now living in the UK and Ukraine.

With blue skies and sunshine the atmosphere was soon buzzing at this charity fundraising event hosted in the delightful Quex Barn gardens and across the park.

DJ/MC Gary Skelton got the day off to a great start and seamlessly kept the vibe going, with a great choice of summer music between the band performances.

The children, and some adults let’s face it, enjoyed Sue’s ‘Lucky-Ducky’ game, a game of skill, which proved very popular. There was a table of silk flowers and floral headbands donated and crafted by Priceless of Birchington. Many could be seen proudly wearing these Ukrainian flower garlands on the day.

When the news first started coming in of the need to help people in Ukraine with basic food, goods, clothes and shelter, the people of the district rallied round.

It has been nearly 3 months since the first donations came through Quex Barn, and no-one could have envisaged how quickly this appeal would grow. It was an extraordinary effort which saw 5 lorries and 7 individual vans of essential aid items sent out to Ukraine.

This fundraising day was the culmination of all that effort, when people came together from all over the district to donate generously, pack boxes for Ukraine and even load vans.

Inside the Little Barn, which was decorated in bunting and balloons of yellow and blue, there was even more to enjoy. The tombola and raffle tables were a huge success, there were children’s activity tables, tables with beautiful handmade gifts, Ukrainian crafts and souvenirs, a vast array of diet-busting home-made cakes (thank you to everyone who baked and donated), refreshments, and original art exhibition featuring scenes from a war-torn Ukraine.

In the main Quex Park car park, Margate Fire Station, Margate Task Force & KFRS volunteers all joined forces at the Help Ukraine event too.

Crews assisted in giving talks around the appliance and giving fire-safety advice and free gifts.  The children, as usual, loved sitting in the fire engine.
