Family and Estate Records

Percy Cotton inherited a wide range of papers and estate records, some dating back to the 17th century. This fired his interest in family history and helped him understand more about his heritage.

Through the activities of his colourful ancestor John Powell (d.1783) these included records relating to the family’s London and Thanet connections, especially with Powell’s notorious employer, the First Lord Holland.

These important records, together with some interesting early 19th century family correspondence, were soon joined by an expanding collection of papers relating to his growing museum.
